COVID count in Cebu City surges past 2,000

CEBU, Philippines — Another 50 tests showed positive results for COVID-19 in Cebu yesterday – 43 from Cebu City, four from Cebu province, and three from Mandaue City.

The total number of cases in Cebu City is now 2,013.

The 50 positive results yesterday were part of the total 393 tests run for purposes of determining coronavirus infection. Some 343 tests turned negative.

According to Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, the four positive results from the province include three repeat tests and one new case from Consolacion town, courtesy of a 30-year-old female resident now admitted at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center.

The additional cases put to 127 the total cases in the province. In Lapu-Lapu City, the total is 86 cases, while in Mandaue city, 238.

Cebu City

The Cebu City Health Department (CHD) announced 164 COVID-19 tests that yielded negative results, bringing the total number of recoveries in the city to 394 as of May 27.

Of the 164 cases, 114 are from Barangay Suba, 33 from barangay Bacayan, 15 from Barangay Mambaling and two from Barangay Sambag 2.

“Now more than ever, we need to make sure that there would be no second wave in our city. Please continue to cooperate with the city government, the DOH, PNP and other government agencies. Protect one another by wearing face masks, staying at home, practicing good hygiene and social distancing,” Mayor Edgardo Labella wrote on his Facebook page.

Meanwhile, Cebu City recorded 21 new positive cases of the COVID-19 yesterday.

Most of the new cases were from Barangay Suba, 7; three from Barangay Duljo; and two from Barangay Tejero.

One case was also recorded each in Barangays Lahug, Inayawan, Sawang Calero, Kinasang-an, San Nicolas Proper, Camputhaw, Mambaling, Pardo and Carreta.

The additional cases have increased to 2,013 the total number of persons infected with COVID-19 in the city.

Around 110 recovered patients from Barangay Suba’s isolation center in San Nicolas Elementary School center were also sent home yesterday. JMD (FREEMAN)
