CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Agriculture Department (CAD) is giving away seeds and seedlings for free.

Joelito Baclayon, city agriculturist, said CAD has expanded its urban gardening program amid the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

“Ato lang gi expand karon, gi massive ug gi promote nato para naay kalihokan ang atong mga kaigsoonan nga naa sa balay ra during the ECQ. Why not spend it productively by producing their own food?,” said Baclayon.

Baclayon said his office has started distributing the seeds to the city residents since last week.

The seeds are of local vegetable varieties, such as eggplant, chili, tomatoes, bitter gourd, okra, and cucumber, among others, he said.

“This is for free. Naa uban sab mangayo og garden soil para ibutang sa ilang containers,” said Baclayon.

Baclayon said the residents can reuse their discarded containers at home as pots for their seedlings.

“We are inviting the public, the whole Cebu City, and even the mountain barangays to avail of the program.  This is open for all,” said Baclayon.
