CEBU, Philippines — An estimated 259 houses were razed by a massive fire that hit Sitio Santo Niño in Barangay Suba, Cebu City Wednesday night.

Authorities received the alarm at 6:15 p.m. and controlled the fire more than two hours later at 8:53 p.m. Damage was pegged at P1.5 million.

The lead investigator, Senior Fire Officer 1 Novo Erana, said no one was hurt in the disaster but more or less 603 families lost their homes. Most of the houses were made of light materials.

Erana said that based on initial investigation, the fire started from the house of a certain Jerry Cabido whose wife, Liezel, told authorities that they heard an explosion of sorts before the fire broke out.

Erana said they are looking at the possibility that the fire may have been caused by faulty electrical connection.  JMO (FREEMAN)
