CEBU, Philippines —The Metropolitan Cebu Water District has started deploying its new water trucks to deliver potable water to the communities affected by the shortage of water supply.

MCWD, in a statement, said that the four new water trucks acquired in preparation for the summer months next year were deployed immediately to problematic areas. One of the areas was Barangay Carreta.

According to MCWD, the acquisition of new water tankers was intended to better respond to the need for water supply in the communities it serve. The water district explained that the shortage for water supply is experienced when surface water sources dry up and are depleted due to the lack of rain and evaporation due to the intense heat.

One of the three trucks with five-cubic-meter capacity delivered water in Barangay Carreta, Cebu City yesterday. MCWD said the area was badly hit when saltwater intrusion affected its wells in Consolacion reducing its daily production by 20,0000 cubic meters  since August 2019 this year.

At present, MCWD have six water tankers and the water utility is still buying two more.

Engr. Edgar Ortega, MCWD Production and Distribution Department manager, said the trucks are deployed daily to the most affected areas like Sambag 1, Sambag 2, Sta. Cruz, and Cogon Ramos.

He said the water district is currently having an average of 30,000 cubic meter production deficit every day. According to MCWD, the daily water demand in Metro Cebu is close to 500,000 cubic meters but the actual production is only at 238,000 cubic meters.

MCWD continues to make an appeal to the public to use only the water that they need, to reuse, recycle and to store water if there is intermittent supply in their areas. FPL (FREEMAN)
