CEBU, Philippines —  A morning fire along 2nd Street, Barangay Duljo-Fatima, Cebu City razed four houses yesterday and injured the owner of the residence where the blaze originated.

Fire Senior Inspector Arnel Abella, Chief of Operations Section at the Cebu City Fire Station, said that they received the alarm at 10:49 am. Firefighters assessed the incident to be under control by 11:34 am, and declared a fire out by 11:52 am.

Elino Figuracion, the owner of the boarding house where the fire began, suffered a first-degree burn.

He said he was about to take a bath when he heard the fire alarm in their hallway. After inspection, he figured that the fire began in one of the rooms upstairs.

Figuracion then attempted to douse the fire with an extinguisher, but was met with a strong blaze.

“Wire gyud siguro, wa may ingon nga nagluto sa taas. Luto sa ubos raman tanan,” he said.

Sr. Insp. Abella told reporters that strong winds caused the fire to quickly spread to other houses, while narrow passageways prevented fire trucks from immediately entering the area.

Firewalls in a few houses helped in thwarting the fire from spreading even further, said Abella who pegged the damage at P200,000.

Police officials are still investigating the cause of the fire. — VAB  (FREEMAN)
