City Hall to relocate 200 Ermita vendors
CEBU, Philippines — Around 200 illegal vendors occupying the M.L. Quezon Boulevard and Warwick Barracks in Barangay Ermita, Cebu City will soon be relocated.
The vendors will be affected by the impending clearing operations.
City Market Administrator Joel Matungina said the city government is still preparing the vendors’ relocation site in consonance with the city’s “no relocation, no demolition” policy.
He said some vendors in Warwick Barracks have converted their stalls into homes, a violation of the city’s Market Code.
He said some vendors are selling fish products even if their permits are only for dry goods.
These vendors, he said, were already issued with a notice of violation.
“The issuance of notices of violations and the clearing operations are parts of the city’s mandate to strictly implement the provisions of the Market Code,” he said.
The city is set to clear the M.L. Quezon Boulevard of illegal structures and other obstructions this week.
“Everyone will benefit from the clearing operation. There will be free flow of traffic and more costumers will be enticed to shop there,” said Matungina.
He hopes the vendors will support the city’s plans and projects.
“This is for the betterment of all,” he added.
Cebu City United Vendors Association Inc. President Maria Pino said she supports the city government’s plan for the vendors and for a “clean and peaceful” market. — Jebert A. Sarsonas (FREEMAN)
