CEBU, Philippines — A man was shot dead after he attempted to rob someone just a few meters away from where a checkpoint was conducted yesterday morning along M.J. Cuenco Avenue, Barangay Tejero, Cebu City.

According to cops who were conducting a checkpoint in the area, victim Greggy Amado Senining, 34, a collection agent of a company, was traversing after collecting payments in the area, when suddenly the suspect appeared with a handgun and tried to rob him.

As the police noticed that the victim’s vehicle was blocking the road, they immediately responded, but the suspect reportedly fired at them upon seeing the cops approaching.

When the suspect tried to flee, he exchanged gunshots with the police and was shot.

The wounded suspect was brought to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Police Captain Armando Labora, acting commander of Police Station 1, said the suspect was allegedly identified by the bystanders and people in the area as a known robber and drug user.

“So far amo lang ma- feedback karon, known tulisan gyud na siya ug illegal drug user. Known na siya as per information given by the residents, sa mga tawo didto sa mga bystanders didto during sa nahitabo,” Labora said.

Labora added that they were waiting for the alleged robber’s immediate family to confirm the suspect’s identity.

The police also recovered a knife and unidentified firearm from the suspect. (FREEMAN)
