SP supports action vs illegal structures

Lorraine Ecarma - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — A resolution has been approved by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan to support the efforts of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in going after resorts in Moalboal built on “no build zones.”

Moalboal is among the leading tourist destinations in the province and has been known for its diving sites and pristine marine life.

Last month, the DENR and DILG announced their joint efforts in running after the illegal resorts in Moalboal built within the delineated 20-meter easement zone.

These resorts violated Section 51 of the Water Code of the Philippines which prohibits the building of commercial infrastructure within 20 meters from the shoreline.

The resolution was filed by Board Member Thadeo "Jonkie" Ouano recognizing the ceaseless efforts of the two departments in putting a stop to the resorts’ illegal operations and in line with the Sanggunian's advocacy to "protect natural resources and coastal environment."

So far, multiple notices have been forwarded to the commercial institutions urging them to follow the law under the warning that the DENR and DILG may “take down” their establishments.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan, through the resolution, also acknowledges the jurisdiction of the DILG over the local government units and questions why these illegal structures were successfully put up in the first place under the scrutiny of the Moalboal LGU.

Meanwhile, Moalboal Mayor Lingling Rozgoni did not issue a statement until she receives her copy of the said resolution. — GAN (FREEMAN)
