CEBU, Philippines — The Cebu City Council is asking the Philippine National Police (PNP) to separate police stations 4 and 8 and create two stations in the upland barangays.

The council, in a resolution penned by Councilor Margarita Osmeña, said the stations are covering the “densely populated” barangays.

“There is a need to separate Police Stations 4 and 8 and add two stations to be situated in the mountain barangays, preferably near a hospital, with radio/ mobile network signal and existing government facility,” the resolution read.

Osmeña said the cops who are assigned in these stations could no longer cover the mountain barangays, which are still under their jurisdiction.

Barangays under Police Station 4 are Apas, Carreta, Hipodromo, Lahug, Banilad, Kasambagan, Luz, Mabolo, Busay, Malubog, Babag, Bonbon, Buot, Pung-ol Sibugay and Tabunan.

On the other hand, Barangays Mabini, Cambinocot, Adlaon, Pit-os, Agsungot, Talamban, Paril, San Jose, Bacayan, Lusaran, Tagbao, Guna, Binaliw, Budlaan, Sirao, Pulangbato and Taptap are covered by Police Station 8.

Moreover, the city council also requested the PNP to deploy 1,000 more policemen to meet the ideal 1:500 police-to-population ratio.

Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) records showed that 1,107 policemen are currently assigned in the city’s police stations.

“Based on the CCPO Quick Profile Report as of March 2019, the number of total police strength in Cebu City is only 1, 107 police in uniform or one policeman for every 833 residents (1:833),” said Osmeña.

After the council approved the two resolutions, they were furnished to the Office of the Mayor, CCPO City Director Royina Garma, Police Regional Office in Central Visayas Brigadier Debold Sinas and PNP Chief Police General Oscar Albayalde for their information and guidance. —/KBQ (FREEMAN)
