CEBU, Philippines — Since the start of the year up to March 12, 2019, the number of measles cases in Central Visayas is now at 898 with nine deaths, according to the Department of Health-7.

The recorded deaths are all from the Cebu Province.

Cebu City posted the highest number of measles cases with 247. Fifty cases were recorded in Lapu-Lapu City, and 34 cases in Talisay City.  Figures for the other cities in the region were not provided.

DOH officials reminded parents to avail of immunization, not only for measles, but as other diseases like polio as well.

“Let us be responsible guardians, let us submit our children sa pagpamakuna,” said Jane Raanan, a nurse assigned to the DOH.

Another nurse, Ruff Valdevieso, reminded the public of the importance of immunization not only for measles.

“Due to the decreased number of parents who do not submit their children for immunization, we are vulnerable for the coming back of the diseases which we no longer see,” he added.

Vaccine posts of the DOH will only be until March 31, 2019. However, barangay health centers will still provide weekly immunizations. — Micole Gerard J. Tizon, USC intern BRP (FREEMAN)
