CEBU, Philippines — An alleged notorious snatcher was killed in a shootout with cops moments after grabbing a phone from a public utility jeepney passenger in Barangay Calamba, Cebu City last Saturday evening.

Police identified the suspect as Arfil Cabtas Dadibalos, 22, resident of the barangay. Initial investigation revealed that Dadibalos had just snatched the cellphone of Arve Campaner, 23.

Campaner sought the assistance of PO2 Melbert Baluntang in Mambaling Police Station. Baluntang accompanied the victim and found the suspect still in the area where the snatching happened.

Baluntang tried to accost the suspect but the latter allegedly drew a caliber .38 revolver, prompting the police officer to shoot him. The suspect was rushed to Cebu City Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival.

Baluntang will be placed under investigation. PO2 Carlo Dumpa Irizari, of San Nicolas Police Station, said Baluntang surrendered his firearm for ballistics examination. He also submitted himself to a paraffin test.

Chief Inspector Kenneth Paul Albotra, chief of San Nicolas Police Station, which has jurisdiction over the area where the shooting happened, said they are waiting for the guidance of Cebu City Police Officer director Senior Supt. Royina Garma on the matter.

“Depende na sa guidance nga ihatag sa director sa CCPO, for now, he is under investigation. Ni-admit man sad siya, mao na mag-paraffin exam and ballistic pud ang armas,” Albotra said.

(We’re waiting for the guidance of the city director, for now, he is under investigation. Although he admitted that is why he was subjected to paraffin test and ballistic exam for the firearms)

The police said the snatching victim was able to recover her cellphone from the suspect. (FREEMAN)
