CEBU, Philippines —  An American was arrested for attempted murder in Cebu City while a Frenchman was arrested for malicious mischief in Carcar City last Friday.

In Cebu City, Michael Philpott was arrested by policemen officers after he allegedly hit Jose Froilan Ariosa and his wife, Annaliza Ariosa with a frying pan inside their room at a hotel along Osmeña Boulevard.

Chief Inspector Eduard Sanchez said the suspect knocked on the couple's room and after Annaliza opened the door, she was hit by the suspect in her left hip using a frying pan. Philpott then allegedly charged at Jose and hit and beat him. Jose sustained severe injuries in his left eye and his back. He was brought to the hospital for treatment.

Annaliza asked help from the security guard of the hotel, but the guard could not subdue Philpott because of his enormous build. Philpott was arrested by the police around 6:30 p.m. that same day. He will be facing charges for attempted murder and slight physical injury.

Police are looking into business as the motive behind the crime as Annaliza said the suspect is her business partner and they have not been in good terms recently.

Meanwhile, a French national was arrested in Perrelos, Carcar City, for malicious mischief.

Frederic Andre Villeneuve, 48, was a passenger on a bus when he allegedly kicked the window glass of the bus for no apparent reason. Hilario Ordaniza, the driver of the bus, then reported the incident to the police.

Ordaniza is set to file a case against Villeneuve. The suspect is currently detained at the Carcar Police Station. — Marjory Enriquez, USJ-R intern (FREEMAN)
