Drug surrenderer shot dead in Dalaguete

CEBU, Philippines — A former drug surrenderer was shot dead by men on a motorcycle in Barangay Tapun, Dalaguete town on New Year’s Eve.

The victim, who was identified as Engelbert Villanueva of Barangay Poblacion, was driving his motorcycle from home when the gunmen fired at him.

The police believe that the gunmen were already tailing Villanueva from Poblacion.

Villanueva sustained gunshot wounds to his neck and in his chest.

He was rushed to the Dr. Ildefonso Alcantara Memorial Hospital in Poblacion, Dalaguete but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Chief Inspector Rolan Aliser, chief of Dalaguete Police, told The FREEMAN that they have yet to establish the motive of the killing.

They have yet to find witnesses who can describe the gunmen and the motorcycle they were riding.

He revealed that the victim was a drug user and surrendered during the start of the Oplan Toktok Hangyo or Tokhang last 2016.

The relatives also said that Villanueva did not receive death threats from anyone.

"Ang biktima walay ingon nga kontra, wala pud kuno nakadungog ang relative nga naay threats ni siya," Aliser said. (The victim does not have enemies and the relatives have not heard that he was threatened. (FREEMAN)
