Fisherman killed in shootout with cops

CEBU, Philippines — A 33-year-old fisherman was killed after allegedly firing a gun at policemen who were patrolling to prevent illegal fishing in Barangay Atop-atop, Bantayan town last Sunday morning.

The fatality was identified as Arnel Derder Marabi, 33, a resident of Barangay Hilantagaan, Sta. Fe town.

Police arrested during the operation Michael Dela Cruz Dignos, 38, also a resident of Hilantagaan.

Newly-installed police chief of Bantayan town, Senior Insp. June Tabigoon, said that his men were conducting a regular patrol when they saw a group of ten fishermen fishing in the marine sanctuary.

When cops approached the group, Marabi accordingly fired at them using an improvised gun called "sumpak."

In response, police fired at Marabi who suffered a gunshot wound and was immediately brought to Bantayan District Hospital but did not make it alive.

“We have been receiving reports and isang experience sa ating kapolisan dun at times na kung di sila pinuputokan is binabangga po lalo na kapag maliliit yung bangka ng kapulisan," Senior Supt. Manuel Abrugenam, director of Cebu Provincial Police Office, said in a press conference.

Abrugena said the operation was legitimate as it was Marabi who fired the first shot.

He said police are now coordinating with the Philippine Coast Guard and the Maritime Office to intensify seaborne operations to secure marine sanctuaries. (FREEMAN)
