CEBU, Philippines —  Thirty-four couples tied the knot in a mass wedding at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City yesterday.

The wedding rite was sponsored by the city government as part of its second “Kasalan ng Bayan” program.

“I personally initiated the wedding ceremony to help them legalize their way of living. With this Kasalan ng Bayan, we were able to give their children a brighter future ahead knowing that their parents are living legally,” said Mayor Paz Radaza, who officiated the wedding.

“Nakahatag usab kini kanila og seguridad nga dili sila basta-basta matarug sa mga pagsuway sa kinabuhi kay sa ilang panag-uban nagkahiusa ug nagminahalay,” she added.

The youngest couple who got hitched were 20 years old, while the oldest were 60.

Vice Mayor Marcial Ycong was among the witnesses of the ceremony.

Radaza said the ceremony would not be possible without the support from Ycong, the City Social Welfare and Development, and City Tourism Office.

“The idea is gusto nato nindot atong ambience sa kasal nga kasal gyud. They (couples) get to enjoy memorable moments of their wedding,” the mayor said.

The dishes were catered by Kababayen-an sa Opon Nagkahiusa alang sa Kalamboan (KONKA), a city government’s livelihood program for women.

The first mass wedding was done in February this year at Hoopsdome wherein 1,014 couples tied the knot. — KBQ (FREEMAN)
