Councilman, ex-brgy captain face drug raps in Danao City

CEBU, Philippines — An incumbent  barangay councilman and a former barangay captain from Danao City are facing criminal complaints before the Danao City Prosecutor’s Office for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

The Danao City Police Station filed the complaints against Archie Cañas, councilman of Barangay Sandayung Sur, and Rodel Almagro, former barangay captain of Guinacot, following their arrests.

Senior Police Officer 1 Arnold Labine said the two were charged with Sections 5 (selling of dangerous drugs) and 11 (possession of dangerous drugs), Article II of Republic Act 9165.

Cañas, 36, was arrested on March 18, 2017 during a buy-bust operation. The police seized 22 grams of shabu worth P265,500 from his possession. A separate buy-bust operation also resulted in the arrest of Almagro, who was described by the police to be very elusive.

Meanwhile, a 17-year-old grade 10 student from a public high school in Barangay Guadalupe,  Cebu  City, is now facing criminal charges in court for possession of marijuana after the prosecutor’s office found probable cause against him.

Prosecutor III Rhodna Bacatan indicted the minor, whose name withheld by The FREEMAN, for violation of Section 11, Article II of RA 9165. The accused is a resident of Barangay Kalunasan, Cebu City.

Police Officers 2 Jerammel Cansacio and Rey Fabroa arrested the student along Kabajar Street in Barangay Guadalupe on March 12, 2018 at 3:15 p.m. after they noticed him holding a transparent plastic containing dried marijuana leaves.

According to the arresting officers, the boy tried to run and threw the plastic away but he was caught up by them. The prosecutor recommended P200,000 bail for his temporary liberty. —FPL (FREEMAN)
