No gifts, food for inmates on Christmas family day

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Relatives and friends of inmates at the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) who will celebrate family day in the jail this Christmas cannot bring in packed gifts and food.

CPDRC Assistant Jail Warden Audesti Miguel explained that the main reason for this is security.

“They would not be allowed to bring anything… The prime concern is on security and we would not let contraband items to get in easily,” he explained.

He denied that the jail management is implementing this so the visitors will only purchase food inside the facility.

The family day for inmates is slated for December 25 and 26. Like a regular visitation day, visiting hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each inmate can have a maximum of three visitors.

Instead of the regular visiting area, the visitors will be accommodated in the quadrangle of the jail facility.

The jail management has yet to finalize the system that it will implement on the two special days.

CPDRC has around 3,600 inmates. If each inmate will have three visitors, the management will have to manage a crowd of around 10,000 people.

The assistant jail warden hopes to accommodate everyone but the management cannot allow them in at the same time because of the facility’s limited area.

To address this, the management will have to limit the number of hours the visitors will stay in the jail.

Those who could not be accommodated on the first day may come back on the second day.

Governor Hilario Davide III said Capitol will write to the Cebu Provincial Police Office to send additional men to augment the security in CPDRC on the two special days. (FREEMAN)
