Barong-Inspired Bomber Jackets

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines —  Jor-el Espina is the brains behind the fascinating “Bomberong,” a unique bomber jacket inspired by traditional pina-woven barongs. This Ilonggo designer works with local weavers to create his beautiful and intricate designs. Jor-el discusses the Bomberong’s design, the process behind it, and what’s next for him.

What inspired these designs?

“I’ve always been fascinated with the weaves and embroideries found in pieces inside the closet of my old folks!”

Can you describe the experience of working with Ilonggo weavers?

“I always have a great time working with the artisans. Working with them widens my knowledge about culture and tradition.”

Where can these jackets be purchased?

“My items can be bought in my atelier and are also available via my Instagram. We’re joining the Artefino fair, too. Also, watch out for the upcoming trade fairs.”

What’s next for you and your designs?

“In the next collection, we will be working with the Panay Bukidnon tribe and their intricate hand embroidery.” (www.preview.ph) - Ysa Singson
