Home Improvement Projects for Summer

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — With summer fast approaching, people all over the country are either working around their schedule for long vacations or spending time improving their homes – after all, it’s easier to work on renovation projects when the weather is nice. If you’re planning renovation projects, you might need a few more suggestions on what to work on. Following are some important tasks you need to get to before the rain strikes in July:

Clean the gutter.

Gutters are responsible for catching rainwater and rerouting it away from the house – to protect your home from water damage or flooding. We usually take it for granted in the summer, so we end up with

a clogged spillway during the rainy season. Block off a Saturday to clean the gutter to make sure it’s in good condition.

Repair the roof.

There’s nothing worse than having leaks on the ceiling during the typhoon season. While it’s bright and sunny, look for any signs of wear and tear regularly to avoid major damage – if you see any small holes during your inspection, attend to it immediately.

Paint the exterior of your house.

Summer is the perfect time for a big paint job – when you don’t have to worry about rains and windy days. If you’re looking to give your home a major makeover, consider out-of-the-box colors that will make people’s heads turn.

Get rid of pests.

Summer is when termites get most active, so nip it in the bud as soon as you possibly can. You may also use natural remedies to deal with pests such as placing cayenne powder near your entryway (for ants) or placing cucumber peels on your counters or inside garbage cans (for cockroaches).

Plan for flood control.

Make sure that the canals and drainage in and around your house are clear. Build zocalos around your doors if needed, and if you’re planning on rising the floor line of your home, now is the right time to do that.

Install a ceiling fan to keep your home cool.

In a tropical country like ours, having a ceiling fan at home is almost a requirement. It will keep the breeze flowing through your home on humid days and it also helps balance the temperature in closed spaces, therefore reducing your electricity bill in the long run.

Clean your windows.

Cleaning windows is more important than some people make it out to be. Take the time to wash windows to extend its lifespan – however, make sure you do it during overcast mornings to avoid frustrating water streaks.   (www.realliving.com.ph)
