Red Spider Veins

I am so amazed to see women wearing dress or skirts or shorts and does not care about visible leg veins. Well in Western countries they really don’t give much thought about it. It’s like part of the norm.

Sadly, in our part of the world everything is scrutinized. No matter how good looking you are or how well-groomed and well-dressed, there is always some flaw that people spot, or anything that makes the look less perfect. In a society that breeds on this thinking, young women become so conscious about visible leg veins. These may also be visible on the face, especially for lighter skin colored patients.

Spider veins plague most women as young as in their 20s. It may be hereditary and it is a branch of the deeper green or blue veins. I remember my mom when I was a teenager always scolding me when I take a shower immediately after a workout or immediately upon arriving from school.

She’d tell me that I’d develop what she called “pasma.” I’m not really sure if what she meant was the visible legs veins for which I’ve done sclero and lasers already. To date, the most effective treatment for the red small spider veins is the lasers because the red veins absorb the intense light emitted by the laser and it burst the small spider veins. The treatment uses a cool glide tip laser, which is as cold as ice on the spot where the red spider veins are. Then it blast off the laser light directly on the vein. The feeling is just like a rubber band on the skin.

The effect differs among different patients. Some may experience immediate lightening of the red spider veins. Others experience initial intensity in the color of the veins, which then gradually fades in a week.

The procedure takes minimum of 10 minutes depending on the severity of the veins. It may take up to an hour for those with severe red spider veins.  The procedure needs to be repeated after one month up to six sessions. Post-laser creams are applied immediately after and the patient can take a shower after three to four hours from the procedure. The effect is not permanent though as leg veins are highly dependent on the lifestyle and hereditary factors as well as hormonal factors in females.
