CEBU, Philippines — “The Forge,” the latest inspiring drama from the Kendrick brothers, is now showing exclusively in Ayala Malls Cinemas. A powerful spinoff to the hit “War Room,” it is directed by Alex Kendrick and co-written by Stephen Kendrick.

The latest offering from the Kendrick brothers – renowned creators of faith-based films such as the aforementioned No. 1 box-office hit “War Room,” “Overcomer,” “Courageous” and “Fireproof” – “The Forge” tells the story of a young man named Isaiah Wright, who has some growing up to do. A year out of high school with no plans for his future, Isaiah is challenged by his single mom and a successful businessman to start charting a better course for his life. Through the prayers of his mother and a prayer warrior named Miss Clara, as well as biblical discipleship from his new mentor, Isaiah begins to discover God’s purpose for his life is so much more than he could hope for or imagine.

Priscilla Shirer, who played Elizabeth Jordan in “War Room,” plays Cynthia Wright, Eizabeth’s twin sister, as well as her role as Elizabeth.

Hand-in-hand

While “War Room” focused on prayer, “The Forge” focuses on discipleship. Director Alex Kendrick says these two elements of faith work hand-in-hand.

“In regard to discipleship, prayer is a huge aspect because discipleship is drawing you closer to the Lord. And of course, what is prayer? It is connecting to the Lord,” says Alex. “The women in ‘War Room’ that pray for each other and invest in the younger generation match up to the men of ‘The Forge’ praying together, keeping each other accountable, [also] investing in the younger generation. We thought, wow, this is a beautiful picture of the body of Christ because they do overlap. And so ‘War Room’ and ‘The Forge’ are in the same world and complement each other.”

Priscilla Shirer, who played Elizabeth Jordan in “War Room,” returns to the beloved world, this time as Cynthia Wright, her old character Elizabeth’s twin sister – who was referenced a few times in “War Room.”

“When the Kendrick Brothers first reached out to me and told me this idea that they were having about Cynthia and then what her connection would be to Elizabeth, my first thought was, mind blown. Where do y’all come up with this stuff?” Priscilla recalls.

“But I was excited because I thought it would give the audience an opportunity to connect with the character because they remember and are endeared already to her sister Elizabeth from ‘War Room.’ So, it seemed to me like a great opportunity to draw a connection there, to draw people’s hearts into a brand new story that has connective tissue to one that they already love.”

Karen Abercrombie is back in “The Forge” as the beloved prayer warrior Miss Clara, reprising her role in “War Room.”

The power of prayer

“We’re hopeful that ‘The Forge’ amplifies the need for strategic prayer, passionate prayer, devoted prayer, as well as discipleship, being devoted to Jesus Christ,” says director Alex. “Those two together are elements of the body of Christ. So, if we can embrace that, and if people embrace the film, we can’t wait to see what God does.”

Alex’s brother, producer and co-writer Stephen Kendrick adds, “This movie really is a picture of follow me as I follow Christ.”
