Realistic love story drew Alfred Vargas to produce 'Tagpuan'

STAR CIRCUIT - Ricky Calderon - The Freeman

Actor-turned-politician, Congressman Alfred Vargas of Quezon City’s 5th District, is honored and excited to be part of this year's Metro Manila Film Festival. His last two MMFF entries, “Bridal Shower” and “Banal”, were both award-winners in the annual showcase.

Alfred produced "Tagpuan" for his own Alternative Vision Production. The Ricky Lee-penned love story was directed by Mac Alejandre and was shot in Hong Kong and New York. Aside from the picturesque location, the film features the mesmerizing performances of Iza Calzado and Shaina Magdayao.

“'Tagpuan' is about real love that transcends conventions and judgment. It faces pain bravely not knowing how things will end up. Love is how you are willing to fight for something until the end. You’ll know what I mean when you watch the movie,” Alfred shares in our interview.

The actor liked the beautiful and real love story that's why he decided to produce the project. “It’s the kind of love that we adults have gone through. Besides, I’ve always wanted to produce quality films that the audience can relate to and remember forever.”

This is Alfred’s second Ricky Lee script. The first one was the internationally acclaimed “Kaputol”, also directed by Mac Alejandre.

What makes a Ricky Lee script exciting to you?

It is always an adventure in terms of acting craft. You’ll have to read his script several times to truly get the most out of his characters. There are always new revelations even while actually doing the scenes. There is always a deeper level the character presents every time. That is why doing his scripts is such an endeavor to be totally grateful for. You’ll learn so many things just by portraying the role.

How is it like working under Mac Alejandre?

Direk Mac is one of the most brilliant directors I have ever worked with. He’s definitely up there in his generation of filmmakers. Direk Mac has both the heart and the mind as his strengths. He follows his gut and always has a clear understanding of the emotions of the film. He’s definitely an actors’ director. He will make sure to get the best out of you as an actor. He’s easy to trust especially during very difficult scenes. Most importantly, you can feel how much he loves filmmaking, and it rubs off on you.

“Tagpuan” reunites you with Iza, one of your favorite leading ladies. How has she changed since your last project together?

I have always loved working with Iza. On and off camera, she is just a wonderful person. We’ve always had this chemistry since 'Encantadia,' 'All about Eve,' 'Impostora,' and many other projects. After doing so many productions together, she has never failed to impress me with her acting prowess. She is indeed one of the best of our generation.

Describe the experience working with Shaina.

It’s my first time to work with Shaina. A dream come true. She mesmerized me with her performance here. She just completely turned Tanya’s character into someone real and intense. And it’s a difficult character to portray. She did it with such originality and creativity. I haven’t seen such a 'Shaina' performance before. On top of this, she is very professional, kind, and easy to work with. Something between us clicked during our first days of shooting in HK and it made the whole experience until New York such a pleasure. I hope to work with her in more projects.

What do you think of MMFF entries being streamed online instead of being shown in cinemas?

It has very big potential. If proven to be successful, this will open infinite possibilities for the industry.

There are several family dramas in the filmfest this year. What makes 'Tagpuan' different?

I will watch all the MMFF entries. I hope everyone does. I believe we’ve got a very, very good lineup this year. Watch our official trailer online and you will get a feel of what the film is really about. I’m sure you will be able to relate to it.
