CEBU, Philippines — Flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL) is set to reopen its PAL Aviation School through a strategic partnership with global flight training leader Airways Aviation Group, reinforcing the airline’s long-term commitment to safety, operational excellence, and workforce development.

Under the agreement, Airways Aviation’s Australia-based training academy will serve as the official training provider for the airline’s cadet pilots.

The move comes after a comprehensive evaluation process in which the global aviation educator was selected for its strong track record in delivering internationally accredited, competency-based pilot training programs.

“Airways Aviation met our stringent requirements and demonstrated a deep commitment to safety culture and training excellence," said PAL President and Chief Operating Officer Capt. Stanley K. Ng.

“We see the value of in-house training in shaping future-ready pilots—professionals who combine technical expertise with a global mindset,” Ng added.

The partnership marks PAL’s drive to cultivate world-class aviation talent and underscores its broader vision of preparing the next generation of Filipino pilots for the dynamic demands of global aviation.

“Our revitalized Aviation School will serve as a cornerstone for building a sustainable, globally competitive aviation workforce,” said Atty. Carlos Luis Fernandez, PAL OIC Executive Vice President – General Counsel, adding that this collaboration, both entities are drawing on the shared expertise and high standards that both are known for.

The first batch of cadet pilots will begin foundational training and undergo a rigorous assessment and selection process in the Philippines.

Successful candidates will then continue their studies at Airways Aviation’s facilities in Australia, where they will receive advanced theoretical and practical instruction using the latest training technologies and resources.

“This partnership is a testament to our shared values and vision for aviation excellence. We are honored to support PAL in developing the next generation of pilots and to contribute to a more resilient, future-ready global aviation workforce,” said Romy Hawatt, Founder and Chairman of Airways Aviation Group

Airways Aviation CEO for Australasia and the Pacific, Janet Dalby, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the partnership's role in advancing both Philippine national workforce goals and broader regional training standards.

“Our aim is to deliver a seamless, globally connected training experience that equips cadets with the skills and confidence to perform at the highest levels,” Dalby said.

The initiative also signals deeper education and training cooperation between the Philippines and Australia, further strengthening bilateral ties in aviation.

“This is more than just a pilot training program—it’s a strategic alliance built on trust, ambition, and a shared commitment to aviation sustainability and excellence,” Hawatt added.

The PAL-Airways Aviation partnership is expected to play a crucial role in meeting the growing demand for highly trained commercial pilots in the Asia-Pacific region, as air travel continues to rebound and expand in the post-pandemic era. — (FREEMAN)
