DTI chief reaffirms support for Filipino entrepreneurs

CEBU, Philippines — On February 12, 2025, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Cristina A. Roque reaffirmed the government's strong commitment to supporting Filipino entrepreneurs during her speech at the 5th edition of ProPak Philippines.
The event, which gathers industry leaders and stakeholders, focused on the latest advancements in processing and packaging technologies.
Secretary Roque emphasized the vital role of local businesses in shaping the country's economic future, in line with President Marcos' vision of a "Bagong Pilipinas." She highlighted how micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are pivotal in driving sustainable growth and innovation in the Philippines.
“We envision a future where MSMEs are at the heart of economic development, bridging innovation with tradition, and empowering Filipino entrepreneurs to succeed in a global market,” Roque said.
At the event, Roque discussed the government's key initiatives to support local industries, particularly the One Town, One Product (OTOP) Philippines Act. This legislation is designed to promote locally sourced materials and traditional craftsmanship, providing comprehensive assistance to Filipino businesses and boosting economic growth across the nation.
Secretary Roque also highlighted the DTI’s involvement in the 31st International Processing and Packaging Exhibition for Asia, held last June in Bangkok, Thailand. The event saw over 2,000 exhibitors from 45 countries, showcasing the latest in processing and packaging technologies. The DTI’s participation in such international events helps Filipino businesses gain access to new technologies, market trends, and global best practices.
“The ProPak Philippines event is not just about showcasing products; it’s about creating opportunities for innovation, collaboration, and sustainable growth. We’re opening doors for Filipino entrepreneurs to expand their reach,” she noted.
Secretary Roque assured local entrepreneurs that the government would continue to support them through initiatives like OTOP and international platforms such as ProPak. “To our MSMEs: We are with you every step of the way. The government is committed to providing the resources, knowledge, and opportunities to turn challenges into successes,” she said.
The 5th edition of ProPak Philippines brought together key industry professionals, including Informa Markets Vice President Ian Roberts and Commissioner Joseph Ross Jocson, to highlight advancements in processing and packaging. These international events offer Filipino businesses valuable exposure, helping them enhance their competitiveness both domestically and globally.
In her concluding remarks, Secretary Roque emphasized the importance of collaboration and innovation in the Philippine business landscape, calling on entrepreneurs to take advantage of the opportunities presented at ProPak and beyond. — JOB (FREEMAN)
