MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Blu Boys gave everything they got but fell short against reigning world champion Australia, 5-4, yesterday in the 18th WBSC Men’s Softball World Cup group stage at the Estadio Mundialistas Hermosillense, Mexico.

The Cebuana Lhuillier-backed and Jasper Cabrera-mentored Blu Boys had all the opportunities to pull off a mammoth upset when they scored three runs in the third inning for a 3-2 lead and held it until the fifth.

But a pair of passed balls and a booming triple by James Todhunter gave the Aussies a three-run barrage in the fifth frame and seized the lead for good as the Filipinos scored just a run from there.

It was the Blu Boys’ second defeat in a row after stumbling against the Dominican Republic, 2-5, in the former’s first outing.

Despite the heartbreaking defeat, Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines president Jean Henri Lhuillier lauded the team for their fighting spirit.

“It was tough, but the boys showed great heart and determination,” said Lhuillier.
