Mad scramble to PBA playoffs

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — For a number of teams, there’s a lot to play for in the last two playdates of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup eliminations this week.

With four games remaining, the race is still very much on for the remaining seats to the quarterfinals with only top seed Bay Area (10-2), Magnolia (9-2), Converge (8-3) and Ginebra (8-3) officially in.

San Miguel Beer (6-5), NorthPort (6-6) and Phoenix (6-6) are in relatively good position but pursuers Rain or Shine (5-6), Meralco (4-6) and NLEX (4-7) may shake things up and complicate matters as they wrap up their preliminaries.

The Bolts and the Road Warriors face off in a pivotal duel tomorrow at the PhilSports Arena. The Gin Kings and FiberXers collide on the same day.

The Beermen shoot for a hassle-free pass to the Last-8 on on Friday against the must-win Bolts on the same day the Elasto Painters fight for survival against the Hotshots.

Although assured of the quarters, Magnolia and Ginebra are still locked in a dispute for the second and last twice-to-beat advantage in the Final 8.

The Hotshots can clinch it outright with their 10th win against ROS, regardless of how the Gin Kings fare against the FiberXers.

Bay Area has secured the first twice-to-beat edge in the next round.

Meralco will soldier on without Raymond Almazan due to a ‘severe’ ankle sprain.
