Bombers stretch run with stunner over Lions
MANILA, Philippines — Jose Rizal University shut down San Beda in the crunch and pulled off an 83-80 stunner yesterday to continue its magical run in NCAA Season 98 at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.
With their early 20-point leads cut down to two in the dying seconds, the Bombers used a defensive effort to weather the San Beda siege and preserve their fourth straight win for a 4-2 record in a tie with the Lions.
JRU’s stifling defense forced JB Bahio and James Kwekuteye to miss from close range, and the Bombers came through with their first win over the Lions since a 97-88 triumph on Sept. 6, 2016.
“We pride ourselves in playing defense,” said JRU coach Louie Gonzales.
Earlier, JRU distributed the ball well, which produced a lot of scoring opportunities particularly from Agem Miranda, who unleashed a career-high 21-point effort.
In the other game, University of Perpetual Help edged Emilio Aguinaldo College, 55-54, to improve to 4-3. The Generals slipped to 0-6.
