MANILA, Philippines — University of the East repulsed gritty Mapua University, 31-33, 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 15-12, yesterday in Pool A of the Shakey’s Super League 2022 Collegiate Preseason Championship at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

The Lady Warriors sparked a pivotal 7-2 spurt midway in the fifth set to create a comfortable cushion before weathering a late fightback by the Lady Cardinals to open their campaign in the tournament organized by Athletic Events and Sports Management, Inc. (ACES).

KC Cepada finished with 21 points while Lia Pelaga and Von Dimaculangan added 15 and 11 markers, respectively, for UE.

Head coach Ronwald Dimaculangan admitted that his wards played tentatively and took time to get their game going.

“We had a shaky start and we were not playing our usual game. We allowed ourselves to play on Mapua’s pace instead of us dictating the tempo,” said Dimaculangan.

In the second game, University of Perpetual Help repulsed San Beda in four sets, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25.

UE broke a 7-7 deadlock in the fifth set with a little help from Mapua’s four costly errors as the Lady Warriors moved at match point, 14-9.
