LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu, Philippines – With the historic Mactan beach and the stunning Cebu sunrise as  backdrop, a bevy of up-and-coming athletes take the spotlight today in the IRONKIDS Philippines at the Mactan Newtown here.

More than 200 promising athletes take centerstage starting at 5 a.m. in a prelude to the widely-anticipated Megaworld IRONMAN 70.3 Philippines presented by AIA Vitality tomorrow.

Though a sideshow, the junior edition of IRONMAN is expected to be marked by fierce showdowns.

Four age groups are on tap featuring varying distances including  the 13-14 bracket (400-m swim, 12-km bike and 3-km run).

Other divisions are 11-12 (400-m swim, 6-km bike, 2-km run, 9-10 (200-m swim, 6-km bike, 1.5-km run) and 6-8 (100-m swim, 2-km bike, 1-km run).

“It took a long time to stage this race and we could have not done it without the support of everyone,” said The IRONMAN Group/Sunrise Events, Inc. general manager Princess Galura on the Cebu race made possible by the City of Lapu-Lapu, Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX), the Municipality of Cordova (Cebu) and the City of Cebu.

“We’re back in Cebu. It’s more than we can ask for. We’re gonna be butterflies again and we’re gonna build this race to be the best in Asia,” she added.
