P50M sports center set to rise in Balayan, Batangas
MANILA, Philippines — San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has committed to building a P50-million sports center in the municipality of Balayan, Batangas in efforts to develop homegrown athletes and promote health and wellness in the province.
“With a growing majority of Filipinos getting protected against COVID-19 through vaccination, there should be greater emphasis on health and fitness for the public in the coming years. Through this sports center, which will be part of our company’s overall support for sports development, we hope to get more Balayan residents involved in sports," SMC President and Chief Operating Officer Ramon Ang said in an emailed statement on Monday.
Ang said the commitment to build a sports facility in the area is aligned with the local government's post-pandemic recovery program, which includes promoting health and wellness among the locals.
SMC has not yet given details yet on the timeline of the P50-million facility's construction and its projected date of completion.
A number of prominent athletes hail from Batangas, including Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings’ LA Tenorio from Nasugbu, and former Ateneo volleyball star Alyssa Valdez from San Juan.
SMC has recently finished building the SMC Sports Complex, its new facility in Pasig designed for the company and its professional basketball teams in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) such as Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Gin Kings, San Miguel Beermen, and Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok.
Ang, a longtime sports patron, has given out P22 million in incentives to the winners of the Tokyo Olympics, with Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz receiving P10 million.
The firm also provided Diaz and the three other winners — Carlo Paalam, Nesthy Petecio and Eumir Marcial — SMC businesses of their own choice.
