Go wants all-out support for sports

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Bong Go yesterday said the country should invest more in sports if it wants to produce more heroes like Tokyo Olympics weightlifting gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz.

“I believe that investing in sports will not only allow our country to develop more world-class athletes who can bring pride, honor and medals to our country, but will also help us in keeping our youth away from illegal drugs and other harmful vices,” said Go during the Senate budget hearing that was attended by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) officials.

Go has been a big supporter of Philippine sports being one of the principal authors of the law that created the National Academy of Sports (NAS) in New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac while advocating for government to help finance the country’s sports programs.

“Let me point out that the PSC and GAB need budgetary support from us now, more than ever, as they are finding it difficult to keep our sports program afloat during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

With his help, the PSC’s budget proposal last year was approved by Congress and resulted to the country’s historic performance in the Tokyo Games where it scooped up a gold, two silvers by boxers Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam and a bronze by another pug, Eumir Marcial.

“Nagbunga naman po ng maganda ang ating pagbigay ng sapat na budget sa ating mga atleta. Through our efforts, the Philippines became the top performing country in Southeast Asia in the recent Tokyo Olympics,” said Go.

“Kaya naman po hinihimok ko ang ating mga kasamahan na suportahan ang budget ng PSC at GAB para tuloy-tuloy lang po ang sports development sa ating bansa,” he added.

Also recently, the PSC and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) have asked for an additional P450 million to bankroll the national team’s campaign in five major international sports events next year including the Hangzhou Asian Games.

Funding will be crucial to bankroll these campaigns and succeed.
