Abueva, Bolick, Williams pace tight BPC race
MANILA, Philippines — Magnolia forward Calvin Abueva, TNT rookie Mikey Williams and NorthPort ace Robert Bolick are the leading contenders for the 46th PBA Philippine Cup’s Best Player of the Conference award.
Abueva, who joined the Hotshots after being traded from Phoenix in the pre-season, amassed the highest statistical points (SPs) average of 35.36 in the elims with Williams (35.30) and Bolick (35.27) closely behind.
Bolick’s NorthPort teammate, high-flying neophyte Jamie Malonzo, occupied fourth spot with 31.5 followed by Magnolia’s Ian Sangalang (31.3) at fifth.
San Miguel Beer’s CJ Perez (30.7), Rain Or Shine’s Javee Mocon (31.1), SMB’s Arwind Santos (29.6), Phoenix Super LPG’s Jason Perkins (29.4) and Ginebra’s Scottie Thompson (29.4) ran sixth to 10th.
Just outside the Top 10 were Ginebra’s Christian Standhardinger (28.9), SMB’s six-time MVP June Mar Fajardo (28.8), TNT’s RR Pogoy (28.5), Ginebra’s 2020 Clark bubble BPC winner Stanley Pringle (28.3) and TNT’s Troy Rosario (27.7).
Abueva, who won the individual honors in the 2016 Commissioner’s Cup with Alaska, averaged 16.1 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.0 steal.
After a slow start, Williams emerged as a major player for top-seeded TNT with 10-game averages of 18.4 markers, 4.2 boards, 3.7 dimes and 1.2 steals.
Bolick has been a force of nature in his comeback from ACL injury, delivering 18.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 7.2 assists for the No. 5 Batang Pier.
