Gilas reaches semis at No.3
MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas bowed to Jordan’s Team A, 72-84, to take No. 3 seeding in the semifinals of the King Abdullah Cup Friday night at Prince Hamzah Hall in Amman.
The Nationals failed to stop Jordan’s 1-2 punch of Ahmad Al Dwairi and naturalized player Cameron Forte and closed out the elims with a 2-2 record.
The Jordanians finished at 3-1 for the No. 2 position behind Egypt (also with 3-1).
Gilas and Jordan go at it again in the knockout semis with the winner disputing the crown against either No. 1 Egypt or No. 4 Tunisia (2-2).
Dwairi dropped 23 points and nine rebounds while Forte submitted a double-double output of 22-11 against the off-target Pinoy cagers, who made only 37 percent of their 61 field goal attempts.
Jordan Heading fired 15 to lead three other Gilas stalwarts in twin digits – Carl Tamayo (14), Rey Suerte (13) and Justine Baltazar (10).
Gilas trailed early, 6-14, but countered with 10-4 bomb to make it a two-point contest at the end of the first.
