Meralco flaunts power vs Alaska

MANILA, Philippines — Meralco got a good run going anew, taking an 89-80 decision against Alaska for its second straight victory in the 46th PBA Philippine Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Nard Pinto sizzled with 16 points on an efficient 7-of-12 shooting while rookie Alvin Pasaol added 13 off the bench as the Bolts solidified hold of third spot with a 4-1 card behind undefeated Magnolia (4-0) and TNT (2-0).

Leader Chris Newsome tallied 14 points, 11 boards and six dimes with anchor Raymond Almazan throwing a 12-8 line for the wards of coach Norman Black.

“I thought once again we played well defensively. We were able to hold the Alaska team down as far as their offense was concerned,” said Black.

“A lot of contributions from a lot of different players coming from a lot of different areas, and it’s good to get that fourth win because Magnolia already has four so we’re trying to keep up as much as possible in the standings,” he added.

Meralco picked up where it left off following a 91-80 win over Phoenix, leading by as many as 16 points catapulted by a 41-31 halftime start.

The Bolts never trailed in the match, keeping the Aces at bay for a dose of their own medicine following the latter’s 74-48 win over Rain or Shine earlier this week.
