MANILA, Philippines — Gilas Pilipinas intends to make the most of the additional preparation time brought about by the postponement of the FIBA Asia Cup to sharpen up for its eventual staging next year.

Instead of doing battle with the continent’s best from Aug. 17-29 in Indonesia, the youth-laden Nationals will do so in July 2022, giving them an extra year to prepare.

That long buildup starts this week in the King Abdullah Cup in Jordan, where the Gilas young guns will be up against Middle East and African squads.

“Gilas Pilipinas flew to Jordan yesterday to play a series of games that were supposed to be in preparation for the FIBA Asia Cup but we definitely understand the decision from FIBA,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio.

“Our young squad will still greatly benefit from the games they will play against Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan and they will surely put that experience to good use come July of 2022,” he added.
