It’s Olympics over British Open for Juvic

Joey Villar (The Philippine Star) - June 25, 2021 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines — Filipino golfer Juvic Pagunsan will skip the prestigious British Open to join the chase for an Olympic gold.

“Juvic confirmed for the Olympics,” said National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) secretary-general Bones Floro.

The 43-year-old Pagunsan himself confirmed the news through Facebook golf page “The Perfect Drive PH” last Wednesday.

“I am pretty excited to represent the Philippines. Who knows? Baka swertehin tayo sa Olympics,” he said.

Pagunsan’s decision was arrived at due to travel and quarantine restrictions since The Open is set July 15-18 while men’s Olympic golf is slated July 29 to Aug. 1.

By skipping the British Open, Pagunsan gave up a handsome paycheck since the reigning Mizuno Open champion in the Japan Tour is set to receive a six-digit (Philippine peso) appearance fee and more if he places well.

But the lure and perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to deliver the country’s first Olympic gold was just too irresistible for Pagunsan to pass up.
