Eala, Andorran partner upset 2nd-seeded foes
MANILA, Philippines — Filipina tennis prodigy Alex Eala suffered contrasting results in her W25 Madrid juggling act, advancing in the women’s doubles quarterfinals but exiting early in the singles play yesterday.
Eala, who was eyeing her second pro singles title, actually started hot and on target before succumbing against fifth-seeded home bet Andrea Lazaro Garcia (WTA No. 272), 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, in the opening round of the $25,000 tilt.
But the Pinay teen continued her fine doubles performance even with a new partner in world juniors No. 1 Victoria Kasintseva of Andorra.
Eala, 16, and Kasintseva, 15, stunned the second-seeded Robin Anderson (WTA No. 221) of the United States and Isabella Shinikova (WTA No. 216) of Bulgaria, 6-3, 7-6 (3), in one hour, 18 minutes.
