Chooks hoping Mindanao leg pushes through

MANILA, Philippines — Sports patron Ronald Mascariñas of Chooks-to-Go has questioned the decision of the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) to suspend the Mindanao leg of the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup in the wake of the controversy surrounding the ongoing Visayas leg.

Mascariñas said suspending the Mindanao leg scheduled to start on May 20 “is not just simply going overboard but is going berserk” given its “different sets of management teams and players and different sets of games.”

Pending the result of its own probe, GAB chairman Baham Mitra ordered the suspension of the nine-team Mindanao event following the controversial game between Lapu-Lapu City and Siquijor last week. It has led to allegations of game fixing, the expulsion of Siquijor from the league, and fines and suspensions on Lapu-Lapu players.

Mascariñas, however, is crossing his fingers that GAB “reconsiders” its decision and allow the Mindanao leg to push through.

Last week, Mascariñas said “the performance on both sides (Lapu-Lapu and Siquijor) was deplorable beyond belief.” Reports even indicated that Chooks-to-Go has threatened to pull out as league sponsor.

Action in the Visayas leg resumes today at the Alcantara Civic Center in Cebu.
