Tigers roar, claim MPBL Lakan Season crown

MANILA, Philippines — Davao Occidental finished off defending champion San Juan with a nail-biting 89-88 Game 4 overtime victory to rule the MPBL Chooks-to-Go Lakan Season at the Subic Bay Gym last night.

It’s a sweet vengeance two years in the making for the Tigers as they got back at their 2019 national finals tormentors, pulling off a 3-1 win in their best-of-five rematch.

Ex-pro Mark Yee uncorked 19 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks including the game-winning trey in the last 14 seconds to complete Davao Occidental’s revenge tour in the historic MPBL tourney delayed for a year due to the pandemic.

Yee, who was hailed as the Defensive Player of the Year prior to the match, also came up with the game-preserving block on Jhonard Clarito in San Juan’s last possession.

Emman Calo (22), Billy Ray Robles (11) and Joseph Terso (11), who sent the game into extra session with two clutch freethrows, backstopped Yee with their own double-digit outputs.

Smelling blood with a 2-1 series lead, Davao zoomed to a huge 37-21 lead in the second quarter only to be caught by a furious San Juan rally in the fourth quarter.

Larry Rodriguez and Clarito led San Juan with 19 and 18 markers, respectively, as Season MVP John Wilson put up 13. Injury-hit San Juan star guard Mike Ayonayon wound up with only three markers.

Making, the All-MPBL first team with Wilson were Ayonayon, Pasig’s Jeric Teng, Makati’s Jeckster Apinan and Yee. Datu Cup MVP Gab Banal led the second team that included Dion Reverente, Aris Dionisio, Chris Bitoon and Pamboy Raymundo.
