Cone says there’s more to come

MANILA, Philippines — Barangay Ginebra’s domination of the PBA Season 45 Special Awards bodes well for the reigning Philippine Cup champion that will strive this year.

Coach Tim Cone said Best Player of the Conference winner Stanley Pringle, Elite Five member Japeth Aguilar, Most Improved Player Prince Caperal and Sportsmanship award winner Scottie Thompson all deserved the recognition.

Cone expects this to further boost their stock and confidence as they prepare to defend the All-Filipino.

“Usually in the PBA, individual awards are often a function of team success so we’re looking for more of both in the upcoming conference,” said Cone.

Pringle spelled the difference in the Gin Kings’ triumphant campaign in the Clark bubble. He netted his first BPC award after nosing out Phoenix’ Matthew Wright in a tight race for the top individual plum, tallying 1,640 points versus the latter’s 1,578.

He was joined in the Elite Five by Aguilar, who also played a key role in the playoffs. Aguilar’s backup, Caperal, was rewarded for stepping up in the absence of Greg Slaughter while Thompson was feted for his exemplary behavior on the court.

“I’m genuinely proud and happy for our guys,” said Cone. “All of those guys who won awards put in the work day to day and the awards are well deserved.”

“It doesn’t stop here. I’ll keep on grinding,” said Caperal.

Meanwhile, Rain or Shine and NorthPort yesterday agreed to a trade involving Elasto Painters Sidney Onwubere and Clint Doliguez, and Batang Pier Bradwyn Guinto.

ROS coach Caloy Garcia confirmed the exchange – the first since the trade embargo was lifted last Jan. 4. “We’re still waiting for approval from the PBA,” he told The STAR last night.

The Elasto Painters aim to shore up their frontline with the entry of 6-foot-6 center Guinto. For their part, the Batang Pier will get two added wingmen in their roster.
