Who’s hot, who’s not

SPORTING CHANCE - Joaquin M. Henson - The Philippine Star

There are some interesting revelations that pop out in going over the scoresheets of every PBA bubble game up to last Sunday. Here they are:

• Only two players have registered triple doubles – Phoenix’ Calvin Abueva with 12 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists in a 105-97 loss to Alaska; NorthPort’s Sean Anthony with 23 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists in a 110-105 loss to Phoenix. Ginebra’s Scottie Thompson was a board shy with 12 points, nine rebounds, 10 assists in an 81-66 loss to San Miguel Beer.

• Seven players have scored in twin digits in every game – San Miguel Beer’s Terrence Romeo (13.7 points average), San Miguel Beer’s Marcio Lassiter (15.3), Magnolia’s Paul Lee (20.9), TNT’s Bobby Ray Parks (21.1), NLEX’ Kevin Alas (16.6), Phoenix’ Matthew Wright (24.8) and Terrafirma’s C J Perez (25). Perez, Wright and Parks rank 1-2-3 in the PBA’s scoring ladder. Romeo suffered a separated shoulder in his third contest and has left the bubble.

• Nine players have scored at least 30 points in a game – Lee (32, 31), Parks (40), R. R. Pogoy (45, 30), NLEX’ Kiefer Ravena (30), Ginebra’s Stanley Pringle (31), Phoenix’ Jason Perkins (31), Wright (36, 31, 33), NorthPort’s Christian Standhardinger (39) and Perez (30, 32). The eruptions, however, were not a sure ticket to a win. Players who hit at least 30 were on the losing side in six of 14 games.

• Only three players have still to score in the bubble – Magnolia’s Mon Abundo (three games), TNT’s Jayjay Alejandro (five games) and Ginebra’s Kent Salado (three games).

• So far, 29 players have posted double-doubles with Standhardinger showing the way. Standhardinger has collected eight double-doubles in nine games, missing out only when he compiled seven points and 13 rebounds in a 102-88 defeat to NLEX. That was the only game where he failed to score in double figures. Aside from Standhardinger, seven others have recorded at least four double-doubles – Thompson (five), Parks (five), San Miguel Beer’s Arwind Santos (five), San Miguel Beer’s Mo Tautuaa (four), TNT’s Troy Rosario (four), Perkins (four) and Blackwater’s Don Trollano (four). Every double-double was a combination of points and rebounds except for one each from TNT’s Jayson Castro, Ravena, Thompson and Wright who had twin digits in points and assists.

• NLEX is No. 1 in most starters deployed with 14 of 15 players. The only Road Warrior who hasn’t started is rookie Will McAloney. Even ageless Asi Taulava, 47, has started once in two outings. Here’s a list of how many starters each team has rotated – San Miguel Beer (8 of 14), Magnolia (10 of 15), TNT (7 of 15), Alaska (10 of 15), Ginebra (8 of 15), Phoenix (9 of 14), Meralco (9 of 15), Blackwater (9 of 15), NorthPort (11 of 12 – the only player who hasn’t started is Bradwyn Guinto), Terrafirma (12 of 15) and Rain or Shine (12 of 15). The Tropang Giga has used seven starters – Simon Enciso, Parks, Poy Erram, Samboy de Leon, David Semerad, Pogoy and Rosario. Castro has come off the bench in every contest.
