MANILA, Philippines — Tokyo Olympics qualifier EJ Obiena returns to action next month in a virtual competition against the world’s finest pole vaulters.

The 24-year-old Filipino will face fellow Olympians Pawel Wojciechowski of Poland and Matt Ludwig of United States in the online contest to be streamed from their respective training locations on Aug. 17 starting at 9 p.m. (Manila time).

Organized by Fine Guard Sports, the event will be the first for Obiena since the pandemic erupted last March while he was in the thick of Olympic training in Italy.

The SEA Games gold medalist was supposed to participate in the postponed Asian Indoor Athletics Championship last February and the World Indoor Athletics Championship in March.

Meanwhile, national athletes in the military service who have either qualified or are seeking slots to the Tokyo Olympics, as well as their coaches, can now focus more on their training.

The Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee and Armed Forces of the Philippines have renewed in principle the tripartite agreement granting detailed service (DS) for members of the Philippine team.

However, it will cover only athletes looking forward to the next Olympics.

“We are working on the list,” said PSC acting executive director Atty. Guillermo Iroy. – Joey Villar
