San Miguel Beer guard Terrence Romeo never expected the avalanche of entries that flooded his Instagram account when he launched the TR Moves Challenge last week. The idea of conducting a contest came like a ray of sunshine during the pandemic as Romeo thought of a way to share his talents and invite everyone, particularly the youth, to imitate his moves with a prize waiting at the end of the rainbow.

“Marami akong realizations naisip sa lockdown,” said Romeo. “Maliban sa tulong sa frontliners, gumawa ako ng paraan especially para sa kabataan na maging-active sa bahay.” He posted a video of his dribbling skills – behind-the-back, between-the-legs, stutter step misdirection, crossover – then challenged his followers to do the same. Romeo didn’t know if it would catch on at first and to his surprise, more than 2,000 entries were sent in via Instagram. The contest was launched on Wednesday last week with a deadline of Saturday. Entries continued to pour in on Sunday, prompting Romeo to do a Part 2.

Romeo said he initially planned to pick 20 winners but with the deluge of entries, upped it to 30 then 50. He also added 10 special winners to reward those with an injury or handicap for their efforts. Romeo dug into his own pockets to buy coffee, crackers, rice and canned food for the winners. Additionally, Peak and Arto Cee Vitamin C contributed to the prize packs. It was Peak which ignited Romeo’s idea to reach out to his followers. Romeo has a popular line of signature shoes with Peak. When Peak recently requested Romeo to promote its new running shoe, he thought of taking the pitch to a higher level. The birth of the TR Moves Challenge came naturally.

“Sobrang nakakataba ng puso,” said Romeo. “Bata, matanda, lalaki, babae, yung mga may kapansanan, lahat sumali. Pinag-aksayahan nila ng oras. Yung isa, three hours niya ginawa. Naiyak ako sa tuwa. Grabe pasasalamat ko. Nagulat ako sa daming magagaling na bata. First time kong gumawa ng ganito. Balak ko after the pandemic, magtayo ng Terrence Romeo Foundation para tuluy-tuloy ang tulong ko sa kabataan. Ang mindset sana nila ay huwag lang umasa sa bigay, umasa sila sa sarili at magsikap sa trabaho to earn what they deserve. Dapat may effort para umasenso sa buhay.”

Taking off from the success of last week’s contest, Romeo is launching TR Moves Challenge Part 2 on his Instagram account @tbvromeo07 today. He’ll accept video entries up to Saturday. “Kumalat sa social media at ang daming nag-request for another chance kaya Part 2,” he said. “This time, pipili ako ng 100 winners.” Instead of kids staying idle at home, here’s a chance to do something that’s fun, that tests their basketball skills. that keeps them active, physically and mentally and that rewards their effort. Romeo’s TR Moves Challenge couldn’t have come at a better time.
