Edu takes different route to NBA
Olmin Leyba (The Philippine Star) - May 24, 2020 - 12:00am

MANILA, Philippines — AJ Edu, who forms a deadly twin tower combo for Batang Gilas with Kai Sotto, is as determined as his G-League-bound frontline partner to reach the NBA.

“Ever since I picked up a basketball my main goal is to make it to the NBA and I believe I’m going in the right direction. Right now it’s as simple as me working hard and I believe it can happen,” Edu said on the Power and Play program on Radyo Singko yesterday.

Unlike the 7-foot-2, 18-year-old Sotto, who’s skipping college in favor of the G-League program, the 6-foot-10 Edu is taking the longer route to the NBA.

The Fil-Nigerian is currently on a medical red-shirt at Mid-American Conference team University of Toledo, sitting out his sophomore year due to the ACL injury he sustained at the FIBA U-19 World Cup in 2019.

“I felt it’s the right decision for me to take the college route. It worked out really well in my first year. I’ve been blessed to play decent minutes and have a great coaching staff who believes in me and helps me develop,” Edu, a Dean’s Lister, said.

He’s still on the road to recovery, estimating to be at around 80 to 85 percent now.

The 20-year-old Edu said he looks forward to see Sotto’s big move in pursuit of his NBA dream.

“He’s a very, very talented player who I’m sure just scratched the surface of his potential. We’re all very excited to see what’s going to happen in the future,” he said.
