Quizon, Laylo hit pay dirt
MANILA, Philippines — Teenage phenom Daniel Quizon lived up to his reputation as the country’s fastest chesser as he topped the eighth leg of the First Philippine Bullet Championship even as Grandmaster Darwin Laylo topped three tournaments on the same day.
Quizon, a 15-year-old international master, amassed 109 points to claim his second title after he also reigned supreme in the fourth leg in this weekly, 10-leg tilt staking a total cash pot of P200,000 courtesy of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
It was another show of lightning-quick chess for the Dasmariñas-based chesser, now considered the country’s blitz king after copping multiple crowns including one in the Southeast Asian Games qualifier.
United States-based GM Banjo Barcenilla finished second with 107 points while Ellan Asuela, untitled but also considered one of the faster local players today, was third with 96 points.
Laylo, a many-time World Olympiad veteran, was only fourth with 92 points, but hit pay dirt in three other events on the same day–the JulyTwoApp and Dasmariñas events in the morning and the Rising Phoenix Arena in the evening.
