Trouble brewing at SMB camp?

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Looks like something’s brewing at the San Miguel Beer camp.

Yesterday, the grand slam-seeking Beermen’s practice turned so heated that a fight reportedly broke out involving injured import Dez Wells, and locals Arwind Santos, Kelly Nabong and Ronald Tubid.

According to reports, the scuffle at Upper Deck Gym was triggered by a hard pick by Santos against Wells with Tubid and Nabong later joining the fray -- Tubid throwing a punch at the import and Nabong hitting the former UE Warrior.

The “skirmish,” first reported by Spin.ph, was the talk of the town even at the PBA games, reaching commissioner Willie Marcial, who’s looking to verify the report to find out if sanctions are in order for those involved.

“We’ll look into it, see whether the reports are true, look at videos and witness testimonies,” said Marcial.

Although the incident didn’t happen in an official game, Marcial said the pro league can still slap penalty on erring players for actions off-the-court.

The reported fight put a dark cloud over the Beermen’s preparations for their all-important elims duel with TNT KaTropa on Wednesday.

The reigning Philippine and Commissioner’s Cup titlists tote a 6-4 record in the ongoing Governors’ Cup, just a shade behind the skidding KaTropa (7-3), and could steal the No. 4 berth and twice-to-beat incentive if they beat TNT in the Antipolo tussle.

Wells was sidelined by an ankle injury, prompting San Miguel to tap sub import John Holland in the Beermen’s losing outing against Rain or Shine in Lapu-Lapu City. But Wells has since resumed practicing, looking to return to action again for the SMB crew out to snare the final piece to a rare triple crown in the season-ending meet.
