Focus now on rumble for second semis berth
MANILA, Philippines — Final Four-bound Ateneo aims to soar even higher above the rest while trailing squads jockey for position to boost their own semifinals hopes in the 82nd UAAP men’s basketball tournament today at the MOA Arena.
Assured as well of a twice-to-beat bonus, the Blue Eagles (10-0) play third-running FEU (5-5) at 12:30 p.m. looking to cement hold of pole position and widen their gap ahead of the pack nearing the end of the double-round prelims.
At 4 p.m., UP (6-3) and Santo Tomas (5-5) collide, both seeking to maintain their places inside the top four while La Salle (4-5) and UE (3-7) try to stay in the thick of the race in their 10:30 a.m. tiff.
The Eagles, yet to drop a loss in 20 games since last season, just scored a 77-69 repeat win over fierce rival Green Archers over the weekend.
But mentor Tab Baldwin wants his wards to keep their eyes on the ultimate three-peat goal.
“We don’t think we’re a great basketball team so there’s always things to work on,” said Baldwin. “We don’t worry what has been accomplished. We just need to keep playing, keep winning and keep striving to get better. We may have accomplished (entering the semis), but that’s not the goal.”
