Cignal, Petron shoot for Final 4 slots
MANILA, Philippines — Unbeaten squads Cignal and Petron try to formalize their entry into the Final Four today when they face separate rivals in the Phiilippine Superliga Invitational Conference at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center in Bulacan.
Sporting a 4-0 card in Pool C, the HD Spikers lock horns with the dangerous PLDT Home Fibr (1-2) at 2 p.m. seeking a semis berth that would boost their drive after an amazing runner-up finish in the last All-Filipino Conference.
The Blaze Spikers, right behind Cignal with a 3-0 slate, face winless Marinerang Pilipina (0-4) in the main game at 6 p.m. of this triple-header that also pits Pool D Final Four hopefuls Sta. Lucia (2-2) and Foton (1-3) at 4 p.m.
Victories by Cignal and Petron will lock up the top two seeds in Pool C, officially kicking PLDT and Marinerang Pilipina out of contention in this short Invitational tourney serving as build-up for the Philippine women’s team members for the upcoming SEA Games.
But it’s easier said than done, warned Cignal mentor Edgar Barroga, especially with a gritty PLDT side on their way.
“We have such a high respect for our opponents so I always tell our players to treat every game as if it is a title match,” said Barroga.
