IWF World Championships

MANILA, Philippines — Hidilyn Diaz clinched a pair of bronze medals in the women’s 55-kg division of the 2019 International Weightlifting Federation World Championships in Pattaya, Thailand Friday to bolster her bid for a spot in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Diaz, 28, took the clean and jerk bronze with a lift of 121 kg then matched the feat in the snatch  and clean and jerk with a total lift of 222 kg. She finished behind the Chinese duo of Liao Quiyun and Zhang Wanqiong in both events.

It was another solid performance for the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist, who duplicated her showing in each of the last two editions of this biennial event in Houston in 2015 and in Anaheim two years ago.

Though Diaz still lacks precious points to qualify to the next Olympics, her bronze medal finishes augured well for her drive to the quadrennial Games with the Pinay champion set to compete in a couple more qualifying events.

“We still lack points. We will join two to three more qualifying events, including the Southeast Asian Games,” Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella told The STAR yesterday. “But after last night (Friday), she’ll make it and she’s determined to make it.”

The IWF regulations allowing a country just one entry per event also boosts Diaz’ chances to win a medal in the Olympics.

“Only one Chinese lifter will make it to the Olympics, which means Hidi (Diaz) can grab the silver medal,” said Puentevella.
