PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan, Philippines — Athletes will battle for slots in the Children of Asia Games in Russia next year while local government units compete for millions worth of sports equipment as action in the National Finals of the Batang Pinoy starts today at the Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex here.

The worthiest performers will clinch a berth to the Philippine squad seeing action in the quadrennial Children of Asia Games while the LGU with the most gold medals won will receive P3 million worth of equipment.

The second to fifth-placed LGUs will get P2.5 million, P2 million, P1.5 million and P1 million, respectively, in this weeklong multi-sports meet for out-of-school youth athletes aged 14 years and below.

More than 3,000 medals including 820 golds will be staked in 31 sports events that drew participation from 10,000 athletes, most of whom qualified via the regionals in Tagum, Davao del Norte, Iloilo City and Ilagan City, Isabela early this year.
